Training Services for Professionals, Parents, Carers and others
*
*
Tailored courses that reflect competency and education requirements are provided for professionals, carers and all whose work may include or impact upon sexual health issues and young people.

We have worked with specialists from various statutory and voluntary departments, organisations and youth settings, including residential and foster carers, teaching and guidance staff, accommodated support staff, frontline, support and youth workers, as well as health professionals.

Workshops are run by our core group of staff who share the experiences of the specialist services offered by Caledonia Youth and help raise awareness of topical sexual health issues. This allows them to update their own knowledge and consider sensitive approaches and methods that they may utilise in their work with young people.

We are keen to continue working with colleagues from a variety of professions across NHS Boards and are particularly interested in supporting staff working with priority groups of young people, sharing best practice and experiences. We are often invited to deliver talks to professional groups across the UK on what is widely considered to be groundbreaking work in this specialist area.

Support for parents, guardians and carers
Evidence suggests most young people in Scotland do not discuss sexual health matters with their parents, guardians or carers. Yet most have expressed the desire to have better information provided by them. Embarrassment or lack of knowledge with uncertainty over how to broach the subject is often the reason behind the lack of two-way communication.

Young people receive many mixed messages about sex from a variety of sources. What is not said can also send a message, leaving young people confused, unsure and worst still, at risk. Caledonia Youth works with parents and carers so that young people are provided with continuity of information on sexual health and relationships. We offer suggestions and tips that have proven to work for us over the years.

In addition to our bespoke training sessions for parents, guardians and carers, an information event is offered to them to air concerns, ask questions and review resources prior to any education work provision with young people. Leaflets are also available to parents that can help them discuss sexual health in confidence.
