Someone to talk to?

Don’t keep problems to yourself! At Caledonia Youth we always like to say – “It’s good to talk!”

We can give you the opportunity to talk confidentially with one of our team, who can help you through a problem. They cover a wide range of problems from personal relationships and sexual health, to body image, self esteem, sexual abuse and rape. We can also refer you on to another service if required.

Talking confidentially to someone you trust may help you:

  • Sort through a problem or look at a situation much more clearly - in a new or different way
  • Release built-up tension
  • Identify options or solutions you’d never even thought of before
  • Realise you’re not alone!
  • Cope better with stress

So, what is counselling?

Counselling is help that focuses on supporting you in a safe and confidential setting. Our counsellors talk with you to explore your feelings and any issues or difficulties you may be facing. They won’t judge you or tell you what to do.

Instead, it’s about you working together with the counsellor, who will offer a space for you to talk and look in depth at the issues you bring up. This can help you gain a clearer understanding of yourself and your difficulties, which can lead to changes in the way you behave or even think about things.

Issues that may be addressed include:

  • Relationship issues and communication
  • Sexuality and values
  • Sexual health
  • Body image and self esteem
  • Sexual abuse and rape

What happens?

After a first meeting the counsellor can discuss:

  • What you want to talk about
  • If counselling can help
  • If you’d be better supported by another department or agency
  • If you can commit to the counselling sessions

At the end of the initial meeting, if both you and the counsellor agree it will be useful, a number of sessions will be planned. These will last up to 50 minutes and you will have a time and date that suits you.

Cancellations

If you can’t make your appointment, we ask you to telephone and let one of the Caledonia Youth team know the day before. This really helps as the appointment can then be given to someone else instead.

Confidentiality

Our professional counsellors at Caledonia Youth treat everything that is discussed and explained during the session with the strictest confidence. We wouldn’t tell anyone about what a young person talks about, unless we believe someone is at risk of harm and, where possible, after discussion with the person first.
