- I've had sex without contraception
/ the condom burst or slipped.
What can I do?
See the section on emergency
contraception and come and
see us as soon as possible.
Why
do condoms fail?
Here are some tips to reduce the
risk of having a burst condom
-
- Make sure you know how to
use them properly, staff at
Caledonia Youth will teach
you the correct method.
- Practise on your own before
you need to use them!
- Make sure your condoms have
a kite mark - this shows that
they have been tested to a
high standard.
- Keep your condoms in a cool,
dark place. They are more
likely to burst if they are
kept near a heat source e.g.
a radiator or bright lights,
on a windowsill or under a
bedside lamp.
- Avoid getting condoms from
vending machines - they are
often kept under bright lights
and you have no idea how long
they have been there.
- Check that they have not
expired - each condom should
have an expiry date on it.
- Watch out for sharp fingernails,
jewellery, and even stubble
on chins or in the pubic area
which could snag a condom.
- Make sure you use the right
type of condom for the right
type of sex. Some condoms
are only designed for novelty
use or oral sex. Anal sex
requires extra strong condoms.
- Never use 2 condoms at once,
they will rub together and
be more likely to burst.
- Never let oil get onto condoms.
This includes:- watching what
you use to bath or shower
in or body lotions on your
body (residue can get onto
condoms even from hours earlier);
hair gel or hair cream on
your hands; hand lotion; massage
oils; oil based lubrication
such as Vaseline; even watching
what you have eaten before
you have sex e.g. a fish supper!
Also be careful if you use
food as part of foreplay e.g.
ice cream which contains oils.
- Only use water based lubrication
gel with condoms e.g. KY Jelly.
- Only use a condom once.
If the penis becomes soft
during sex, remove the condom
and put another one on when
it is hard again. Avoid the
penis going near the vaginal
area without a condom on.
- As soon as a man has come
(ejaculated) he must remove
his penis from the vagina.
The condom is only designed
to stay on while a penis is
hard (erect). The penis softens
as soon as a man has come,
so the condom can slip off.
